JURASSIC WORLD REBIRTH opening | The Jurassic series | Where we are now | July 4 to 6, 2025 4th of July weekend
Opening weekend box office, charts and commentary.
The current weekend: July 4 to 6, 2025, 4th of July weekend (U.S. Independence Day)
1) Jurassic World Rebirth opening
- This is an excellent opening for the 7th episode of an action adventure monster series. The Jurassic films have broken records over the years and the last three openings have been giant (between $145m and $209m over 3 days). This weekend is not on that level and as good as it is, the series is showing some wear.
Including Wednesday and Thursday, the est. 5-day start is an impressive $141.2m. The previous films started over 3 days, so we can’t compare that number fairly.
The audience score is very good (a B CinemaScore), but it’s one grade below the last last three Jurassics (an A-, A- and A):
- The series has been especially good overseas and so far foreign business is outstanding. Dinosaur action is understood in all languages and across all cultures. Even with China contributing less than in the past (something that’s true for all American films), the international numbers are very strong.
The Jurassic series
- The original Jurassic Park was one of Steven Spielberg’s seminal creations. There have always been big-screen dinosaurs and dinosaur-like creatures, but in 1993 Jurassic Park elevated the experience for all audiences, including Western audiences.
- The first Jurassic made $1.1 billion worldwide 32 years ago and became the all-time box office champ, surpassing Mr. Spielberg’s 1982 E.T. the Extra-terrestrial. In 1993, the avg. domestic ticket price was $4.20, vs. $11.25 today. Adjusting for Inflation, Jurassic Park made around $2.95 billion — that’s astounding and among the top-5 biggest films of all-time.
(To compare all the top movies fairly, we would need to adjust each of them for inflation, including the two Avatars, Avengers: Endgame, Titanic, and this year's Chinese animated smash Ne Zha 2. Let's not do that right now. It’s simple: Jurassic Park belongs in the record books.)
- The series ran down with episodes #2 and #3. No problem. Following a suggestion from Mr. Spielberg, a new story was written around the idea of a "real" theme park for dinosaurs and a mutated, monstrous dinosaur that escapes. Jurassic World in 2015 was another smash, bigger than before:
- After bouncing back, the last two releases have declined again, and Rebirth will be another step down. Of course, these are enormous figures, but they are falling. To get back to a billion dollars per film, it will take another story refresh. For now, the series is still making a lot of money.
By the way, in 1993, in addition to Jurassic Park, Steven Spielberg’s Schindler's List also opened, which earned him an Academy Award for Best Director and Best Picture. So while he was smashing BO records, he was also turning to more serious themes and stories. 1993 was a very good year for the director, and a turning point.

Where we are now
- Next weekend has Superman, and the last weekend of July has The Fantastic Four. Both pictures are tracking extremely well and should re-energize the superhero genre, which is good news for superhero fan-heads.
The big titles in the middle of the month — I Know What You Did Last Summer and the Smurfs musical — are wildcards.
