THE ACCOUNTANT 2 | STAR WARS: EPISODE III - REVENGE OF THE SITH re-release | UNTIL DAWN openings | Where we are now | April 25 to 27, 2025 weekend
Opening weekend box office, charts and commentary
The Current Weekend: April 25 to 27, 2025
1) The Accountant 2 opening
- This is a very good domestic opening for the 2nd episode of a crime thriller series. The weekend figure is well above average for the genre, and roughly equal to the 1st film's opening in 2016 (on average, these 2nd episodes start -24% below the 1st film's opening). Critics' reviews are enthusiastic and the audience score is excellent (an A- CinemaScore).
Overseas business has been soft for this series. Recently the dollar has weakened against most foreign currencies by -5% to -10%, and that’s helping all American movies abroad right now, but so far the foreign openings here are below par:
- Crime thrillers are generally single-episode stories; there have been only 16 during the last 29 years that continued as a series. It takes a leading character with a unique personality quirk, played by a high-profile actor, to set them apart. That's what's happening here.
2) Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith re-release opening
- This is an excellent opening for a Star Wars re-release. There have been only two re-releases among all movies that were bigger than this (the 1st Star Wars in 3D in 1997 at $35.9m, and The Lion King in 3D in 2011 at $30.2m).
For this run, you can ignore the domestic multiple number (how long the film will play in theaters), as well as the international number. This is designed to be a one-week domestic engagement, and it’s unclear how many countries the movie will play in:
3) Until Dawn opening
- This is a good opening for a single-episode horror film, at just above average levels for the genre. For video game-based horror material, the start is below average, and it’s not on the level of a horror series launch, but…
Foreign business is very good and the movie was inexpensive to make (an est. $15 million), leaving the door open to a potential follow-up sequel:
4) Where we are now
- After a slow start to the year that looked a lot like last year, business has been excellent during the last three weeks. Minecraft and Sinners are electrifying audiences and this weekend’s new titles are doing very good business. Momentum is good heading into the summer.
On Wednesday we'll have the state of current film franchises. 2024 was a very good year for series pictures, and 2025 should build on that. Like last year, it’s back-loaded.
