SCREAM 6 opening | 65 opening | CHAMPIONS opening | The awards-contenders' final numbers | March 10 to 12, 2023 weekend
Opening weekend box office, charts and commentary
The current weekend: March 10 to 12, 2023
1) Scream 6 opening
- This is an excellent opening for an elite horror series, one of only seven to reach a 6th episode. At this point, every other series was dropping sharply — you can see it in the -46% average opening. Meanwhile, Scream is gaining strength, and it’s the second time the series has jumped in 14 months.
Reviews and audience scores are very good, and international business should be solid. 27 years after launching in 1996, the franchise is healthier than ever:
2) 65 opening
- This is a soft opening for an original sci-fi action film. The weekend figure is below average for the genre, and reviews and audience scores are weak. These movies do well overseas and 65 can make up some ground abroad.
Sci-fi action films are big productions and this one reportedly cost around $90m to make. Half the budget qualified as a tax credit, but 65 is unlikely to be profitable after counting all related costs:
3) Champions opening
- This is an average opening for a sports drama comedy, which is a modest genre — the norm is a $4.4m opening, with limited international potential. These stories are usually about a quirky character overcoming the odds to deliver an unexpected and rousing victory — that’s the story here too:
4) The awards-contenders’ final numbers
- Below are the nearly-final numbers for the 2022 contenders going into the Academy Awards weekend. In the event of a sweep by one film, there will be a bit more theatrical business to come, but most of the pics have finished their runs.
As noted, the 2022 hits have made this one of the highest-profile awards seasons in many years. But the year-end dramas — the prestige/auteur movies that start arriving in late October — have been relatively limited in their appeal:
- The year-end dramas are a small piece of Hollywood's worldwide box office — around 1% now, down by roughly half. But whatever their size, these are important films to the industry and to the audiences that love them. There will be bigger movies in the future, but not this year or lately:
