1) Scary Movie 6 opening

Scary Movie 6, co-written by Marlon, Shawn, Keenan and Craig Wayans, stars Marlon, Shawn, Anna Faris and Regina Hall, and was made for a reasonable $30 million, from Paramount.

- This is an outstanding opening for a comedy sequel this far into its series. It marks the creative return of the Wayans brothers, who wrote and directed the first two films in 2000 and 2001. It's a huge bounce-back after the last episode crashed in 2013 when Anna Faris and Regina Hall were excluded.

• The weekend figure is triple the average for the genre. The reception is mixed: Critics don't like these movies and the audience score is fair (a C+ CinemaScore, below the best of the series in the B range).

  • It’s rare that any comedy series gets to six episode — it's extremely difficult to keep the jokes fresh and the story alive. Tyler Perry did it with his Madea character; there’s going to be a sixth Jackass film later this month; and there were six Vacation comedies. Add Scary Movie to the list:

2) Masters of the Universe opening

Masters of the Universe is based on the 1980s Mattel toy and media franchise that followed it (comic books, magazines, an animated TV series, a 1987 film that made $17 million), from Amazon MGM.

- This is a weak opening for an action adventure with franchise and series potential. Critics’ reviews and audience scores are both good (a B CinemaScore), but the weekend figure is low. The movie was made for $170 million before marketing & distribution, putting break-even out of reach by standard accounting practices.

• Films based on toys are a good idea — there have been big successes across all kinds of genres (Barbie, Transformers, the Lego movies, and Trolls).

  • This is a fantasy hero adventure, and right now the only fantasy heroes doing strong business are the biggest and most established superheroes, like Spider-Man, Deadpool, Wolverine, and Superman. The genre has cooled:

3) The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act opening

The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act combines the 8th & 9th episodes of the award-winning YouTube series, written and directed by Cooper Smith Goodwin, from Fathom Entertainment.

- This is the 8th & 9th episodes of the award-winning Australian animation series made for adults that started on YouTube and then played on YouTube and Netflix. This was going to be a limited release, but fan interest and ticket pre-sales exploded and now it’s a two-week wide release before returning to TV.

• The story follows six humans trapped in a cartoonish virtual reality circus simulation. Overseen by an erratic ringmaster AI, they engage in nonsensical adventures to distract themselves from the situation, while at risk of losing their sanity and “abstracting” into digital monstrosities. Very different, very original.
